Redefining the Path to Legends
Vyšehrad is a place steeped in legends — some rooted in real events, others lost to time. What remains certain is that these legends and unique genius loci remain strongly present in Vyšehrad to this day.
The introduction of a new wayfinding system was a long-awaited milestone in Vyšehrad’s renewal. To discover the legends, one must be able to reach them, and we wanted to make that journey effortless for future visitors.
The site’s previous wayfinding system was inconsistent and deteriorating, lacking a cohesive and functional structure. New implementation was preceded by thorough research and a radical redefinition of the guiding system for the visitors.
The importance of subtle
Our ambition was to create a subtle yet effective system that enhances the site’s charm, without drawing undue attention to itself. Too much information creates visual clutter, the exact opposite of what a quiet place like Vyšehrad needs.
The new wayfinding system now consists of directional signs, freestanding vertical totems, and information boards. Made of steel with a matte black finish, the signs feature educational texts, illustrations and a map. A distinctive feature of the system is the brass haptic logotype of Vyšehrad embedded into the totem’s frame which reminds visitors of the importance of the place.
The creation and implementation of the system would not have been possible without close collaboration between the National Cultural Monument’s management, architects and designers.
