In 2011, Jan graduated from UMPRUM in Prague (Graphic Design and New Media) with the project City = Medium, in which he, together with Vladimir 518 and Markéta Vinglerová, explored the history and present state of light interventions in public spaces, as well as the potential of the city as a medium. The project resulted in a book that was awarded the title Most Beautiful Book of 2012.
During his internship at the leading Czech graphic studios Laboratoř and Najbrt, Jan worked on a number of visual identities, including those for the National Film Archive, the National Technical Library, and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. From 2013 to 2018, he was active in design education at UMPRUM in Prague.
In 2019, Jan Matoušek was honored at the prestigious Czech Grand Design Award for the visual concept of the exhibition and the design of the book Dictator of Time: (De)contextualization of the Phenomenon of Laterna Magika.
Between 2014 and 2019, Jan, together with photographer Vojtěch Veškrna, realized the type-photographic project Squadron: A Reflection of Czech Aviation. By digitizing Ladislav Sitenský's archive and documenting the air base in Čáslav, the authors created a unique type family and compiled an art-documentary book about Czechoslovak aviation across two time periods.
In 2020, Jan, together with Miroslava Mitísková (Miroko Maroko), won the competition for a new visual identity of the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument.
