Epos 257
(2018)
A catalogue dedicated to artist and urban explorer Epos 257 – tracing the journey of a dirty plastic bag from the street as it transforms into something extraordinary.
Epos 257 immerses himself in his work, engaging with the urban landscape, literally through his physical experience. Pushing through bushes, fences, subway vents and other hidden places, he continues to follow his discoveries.
Urban wilderness in a plastic bag
The catalogue, titled “Roots, Branches, Offshoots” is the exploration of abandoned urban places that lost their original purpose. Epos 257 acts as a traveller, observer and active participant in the temporary moment of transformation of the urban landscape into wilderness. The strange places where factories and train stations used to be are now taken by the wilderness. At least for a while, until civilization inevitably reclaims it.
To reflect the artist's authentic approach, the book design embraces unconventional materials. The cover is made of corrugated cardboard — both a packaging and typically street material. Each copy of the book is wrapped in a plastic bag, personally collected by Epos 257 from specific locations and later washed in a public laundromat.
Happy end?
To our delight, shortly after its release, the book was awarded the Most Beautiful Book of the Year award.
And so, a once worthless plastic bag became a coveted item, finding its place on the shelves of many bookstores and libraries.
