Transformation over demolition

Architecture Day is an annual event held in more than 100 Czech and Slovak cities since 2011. Together with the Film and Architecture Festival, it invites the general public to see their surroundings from a new perspective through the eyes of architects, historians and experts.

The theme of the 12th edition “Don't demolish, transform” was the guiding principle of the festival. To visually express this idea, we captured the transformation of the former distillery undergoing extensive reconstruction.

This site, located next to MeetFactory —where our office is based—allowed us to witness the daily evolution of the space firsthand. Most of the surrounding structures were demolished, leaving only the former brewery building to be preserved and renovated.

New life

Together with photographer Tomáš Souček, we set out to capture the building's changing state. Covered in mesh and scaffolding, it looked different each day, constantly changing before our eyes.

While the remnants of the surrounding buildings disappeared, the central building slowly came to life. The festival reached its symbolic moment when the scaffolding was removed from the newly renovated building — fulfilling the festival’s motto “Don't demolish, transform” .
